Hinges and Frames for Solid Wood Weight
A solid carved door can weigh several times a standard door. Standard hinges and screws into a thin jamb let it sag, bind and gap within a season. We size the hinges to the weight, fix them into framing rather than trim, and shim and level the frame first.
Replacing an Old Front Door, Step by Step
Measure the rough opening
The old door is measured with its frame, and the opening behind the trim is checked for square and rot.
Remove the old door and frame
Trim, frame and threshold come out cleanly so the opening can be inspected and repaired.
Set and seal the new frame
The frame is shimmed plumb, fixed into framing and flashed and sealed against wind-driven rain.
Hang, adjust and weatherstrip
The door is hung, locks and strikes aligned, and the seal checked all the way round.
Pre-Hung vs Slab Installation
A pre-hung door arrives in its own frame and replaces the old one, usually the better choice for an exterior door. A slab is hung in the existing frame, which works when the frame is sound and square.
How Much Does Front Door Replacement Cost?
Two prices, depending on the door. A new custom wood front door from us mostly runs $4,000 to $20,000 installed. Hanging a door you already own is priced by the opening: whether the frame stays, how heavy the door is and any permit work. The fastest way to a number is a photo: text one to (727) 353-8639 and we reply with a price range or a time to look.
Permits for Front Door Replacement
Exterior door replacement in Pinellas and Hillsborough usually needs a permit. Since July 2026 some single-family jobs under $7,500 outside flood zones can be exempted on request; most custom door jobs cost more, and St. Petersburg's own exemption list does not name doors. Where a permit applies, the product and installation may be inspected against it. Permit work is quoted as its own line. Most of our custom doors run $4,000 to $20,000, installed; the exact number is set in a written quote once the opening is measured and the materials are chosen.
FAQ
Front Door Replacement FAQ
Do you replace front doors in St. Petersburg?
Yes. We take out the old door and frame and install the new one, whether we built it or not. Permit work is quoted as its own line.
Does replacing a front door need a permit?
Usually, yes, because an exterior door is part of the building envelope. Since July 2026 some single-family jobs under $7,500 outside flood zones can be exempted on request. We check at the consultation and quote any permit separately.
How long does a front door replacement take?
Hanging the door is typically a day's work. A custom door is built first, which takes weeks, and the install date is set once it is finished.
Will you install a door I bought online?
Yes. We check it on arrival and seal any unfinished edges first.
Do you haul away the old door?
Removal is listed on the quote.
